Carson : Funds for ‘Hands’ Denied

Share

The City Council has voted against spending about $1,300 on programs to promote Carson at the nationwide Hands Across America fund-raiser May 25.

Mayor Sylvia Muise supported a plan to buy Carson T-shirts and provide bus transportation for residents attending the fund-raising event, which is to create a human chain from New York to Long Beach to demonstrate concern for America’s hungry and homeless.

Councilwomen Kay Calas and Vera Robles DeWitt denounced the plan as an inappropriate use of city funds. “If people volunteer their time, they can buy their own T-shirts,” Calas said.

Muise said the expenditure would promote the city by showing Carson’s link in the human chain when television cameras pan it.

After Muise’s motion to provide the $1,300 died, all four council members present voted to support the concept of the event but asked residents to pay for their own T-shirts and transportation.

Hands Across America officials will present flags to city officials in Torrance, Redondo Beach and El Segundo today and register residents for participation in the event.
