White Sox Official Meets With Fregosi, Will Talk With Martin’s Agent Today
The Chicago White Sox’s managerial plot thickened Wednesday when vice president Ken Harrelson had what he described as a general discussion with Jim Fregosi regarding the possibility of succeeding beleaguered Manager Tony LaRussa.
Fregosi, the former Angel manager and a success in recent years as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals’ Louisville farm club, was reached by phone Wednesday but said he would have no comment as long as LaRussa remained as Chicago manager.
Harrelson asked for and received the Cardinals’ permission to talk with Fregosi just 24 hours after talking with Billy Martin, who remains under contract with the New York Yankees.
Martin’s agent, Judge Ed Sapir, said Wednesday he will meet with White Sox co-owner Jerry Reinsdorf today. Sapir said he also has a meeting scheduled Friday with Seattle Mariners owner George Argyros, who is reportedly weighing the future of Manager Chuck Cottier.
The White Sox, in addition to Martin and Fregosi, are also believed to be considering Dick Williams.
