Farmers agreed to idle 43.2 million acres of land.
The land, which produced grain and cotton last year, was set aside as a condition of receiving crop subsidies this year under the new farm law. A total of 79.4% of eligible acreage was enrolled in the program--up from 67.7% last year. Wheat producers agreed to idle 20.3 million acres, feed-grain producers 18.2 million, upland cotton farmers 3.4 million, extra-long-staple cotton producers 3,448 and rice farmers 1.3 million.
