Shareholders at the company’s annual meeting were told that Ford plans to eliminate about 20% of its salaried work force in the United States by the end of the decade. The reduction in white-collar jobs has been alluded to by Ford executives for about a year. The white-collar force numbers 48,700, 30% lower than in 1979, according to figures supplied by Ford. Chairman Donald Petersen also said the company’s efforts to save 425 jobs at one of its oldest factories, a radiator and heater-core plant in Green Island, N.Y., do not look promising.
