White Sox manager Tony LaRussa was given a vote of confidence today to continue running the slumping Chicago ballclub, ending days of speculation that he would be replaced by Billy Martin or ex-Angels manager Jim Fregosi.

The announcement also made clear that LaRussa will have more freedom to call the shots on the field without interference from Ken (Hawk) Harrelson, the club’s newly hired vice president for baseball operations. Harrelson conceded that several of the changes he imposed upon the club have failed.
