Capt. Midnight Concerned Over His HBO Antics

A video hacker calling himself Captain Midnight, who stole HBO’s signal and replaced it with his own last month, declared himself the champion of satellite dish owners Friday but said he is afraid of being caught and might not stage the protest again.

“I blocked HBO signal to draw attention to our cause,” he said in a computer-synthesized voice in a taped message that arrived Friday, in a box with a Dallas postmark, at the Independent Satellite Television Network office here. “Home dish owners should not be expected to pay more than their next-door neighbor who is on cable.”

HBO viewers in the eastern two-thirds of the nation had their programming interrupted for five minutes recently with a message saying, “Good evening HBO from Captain Midnight. $12.95 a month? No Way! (Showtime Movie Channel Beware.)”

HBO recently scrambled its signal to prevent reception by customers who get cable television but do not pay for HBO.
