Horse Racing Roundup : Stevens Rides Outstandingly to Victory at Hollywood Park

Outstandingly, ridden by Gary Stevens, closed strongly through the stretch Saturday to score a 1-length victory in the $79,850 A Gleam Handicap for older fillies and mares at Hollywood Park.

Eloquack, ridden by Bill Shoemaker, finished second, a half-length in front of favored Shywing, ridden by Laffit Pincay.

Outstandingly, who earned $46,100, was clocked in 1:21 4/5 for seven furlongs and paid $7.60, $4.20 and $2.60. Eloquack returned $4.40 and $2.60, and Shywing, the 8-5 favorite, paid $2.60 to show.

Love That Mac, ridden by Eddie Maple, overtook front-running Ziggy’s Boy at the wire for a nose victory in the $171,600 Carter Handicap before an opening-day crowd of 31,117 at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

Ziggy’s Boy, the favorite with Randy Romero aboard, led from the start of the seven-furlong race, and Maple was forced to take Love That Mac from the rail to the outside during the stretch run.

Love That Mac, a Florida-bred 4-year-old son of Great Above, was timed in 1:21 3/5 and paid $7.40, $3.60 and $2.60. Ziggy’s Boy returned $3.20 and $2.60, and King’s Swan paid $2.80 to show.

Uptown Swell equaled the 16-year-old track record of 2:27 2/5 for 1 1/2 miles on the turf with a one-length victory over longshot Southern Sultan in the $138,300 Dixie Cup Handicap at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.

Nick Santaga, rider of Southern Sultan, protested to the stewards, claiming interference through the stretch, but the stewards disagreed.

Uptown Swell, ridden by Walter Guerra, paid $5.80, $4.40 and $3.60; Southern Sultan returned $16.20 and $10.20, and Carlypha paid $7.80 to show.
