Amtrak and its engineers agreed to hold talks, and union officials called off a threatened midnight strike that would have disrupted travel for 24,000 inter-city travelers and possibly hundreds of thousands of commuters. “Amtrak expects to operate all of its trains normally without disruption,” Amtrak spokeswoman Sue Martin said from Washington. Union and management officials said they agreed to meet in Washington on Tuesday. The union will bring up proposed changes in working conditions for engineers, including ways to reduce stress, union official William G. Hausleiter said, refusing to elaborate.
