The World : Shultz Assails Security Cuts

Secretary of State George P. Shultz accused Congress of risking “a tragedy for U.S. national security “ by considering a plan to cut the State Department’s budget request by 20%. He said the House Budget Committee, which last week approved a budget for the next fiscal year, is seeking to reduce the department’s $22.6-billion request to $17 billion. Such a cut would threaten efforts to enhance security at embassies threatened by terrorists, Shultz contended. He spoke to reporters during a refueling stop at Moffett Naval Air Station in California on his way from Hawaii to Washington.
