National League Roundup : Teufel Fails to Bunt, Hits Away and Mets Win, 1-0

New York Met Manager Davey Johnson twice wanted Tim Teufel to sacrifice in the ninth inning Monday night. Teufel instead wound up with a run-scoring single that gave the Mets a 1-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves at New York.

Ray Knight opened the New York ninth with a double off reliever Paul Assenmacher (1-1), bringing up Teufel.

“I don’t like to bunt if I don’t have to,” Johnson said. “Atlanta was looking for Tim to bunt on the first pitch, but I signaled for him to go for the base hit.

“When Teufel fouled off the next pitch, I put the bunt back on, but when the count reached 2 and 1, I figured we would go for the hit once again. It worked.”

Teufel singled up the middle for his third hit of the game, and Knight easily scored on the play.

The victory was the 19th in the last 21 games for the Mets, as starter Sid Fernandez and reliever Roger McDowell (3-0) combined on a four-hitter and struck out 13.

Fernandez worked the first seven innings, giving up four hits and striking out 10. McDowell pitched two hitless innings.

Cincinnati 4, Montreal 3--Eddie Milner homered with two out in the top of the ninth inning to give the Reds the victory at Montreal and snap the Expos’ eight-game winning streak.

For the Reds, it was their second straight victory after losing 16 of 18.

Milner’s first home run of the season came after reliever Bert Roberge (0-1) retired the first two batters in the ninth. Roberge was making his first appearance for Montreal since being recalled from the minors May 1.

Ted Power (1-3) pitched 1 innings for the victory.

Philadelphia 5, Houston 1--Von Hayes hit three doubles and drove in two runs, backing Shane Rawley’s seven-hitter as the Phillies won at Houston.

Rawley (4-3) struck out three and walked two, while the Astros’ Jim Deshaies (0-1) gave up four runs on five hits in 4 innings and took the loss.
