Tennis Roundup : Lendl Advances Along With Becker, Noah and Vilas; Gomez, Jaite Upset

No. 1 Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia, No. 3 Boris Becker of West Germany and No. 4 Yannick Noah of France coasted into the second round of the $435,000 Italian Open Tuesday at Rome.

Lendl defeated Francesco Cancellotti, the No. 1 player in Italy, 6-4, 6-2; Becker beat Davis Cup teammate Michael Westphal, 6-2, 6-0, and Noah, the defending champion at the Foro Italico, eliminated Brod Dyke of Australia, 6-2, 6-2.

No. 6 Andres Gomez of Ecuador, the tournament winner in 1982 and 1984, was upset by West German Hans Joerg Schwaier, 6-3, 7-6.

In another surprise, Ronald Agenor of Haiti ousted No. 8 Martin Jaite of Argentina, 6-4, 6-4. Jaite had beaten Becker last week in the quarterfinals at the Tournament of Champions.

In an dramatic match, Guillermo Vilas of Argentina, who lost in the Tournament of Champions final to Noah last Sunday, downed No. 10 Jimmy Arias, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

Trailing 1-5 in the final set, Arias saved six match points before losing in 2 1/2 hours.

At West Berlin, Claudia Kohde-Kilsch defeated Isabel Cueto, 7-5, 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals of the women’s $150,000 West German Championships.
