Spitting
I read with interest Jim Mann’s article (April 27), “China Revives War on Habit of Public Spitting.”
I was in China recently and know of this habit. However, I would like to say that China is to be complimented for endeavoring to eradicate this habit with legislation and education. This, unfortunately, cannot be said for the United States, which boasts of a higher standard of education and health awareness.
Not only do we see the same habit in our own streets, but also at ball games by the heroes and idols of our young people. How can we educate our young about the health dangers of spitting if in every televised ball game we are honored with the close-ups and replays of such bad habits, apparently giving them the idea that this is acceptable behavior?
