Nontoxic Chemical Leaks From Union Carbide Plant

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — About two pounds of liquid butadiene, a nontoxic chemical that can be an asphyxiant, escaped into the air and vaporized Wednesday during a brief leak at Union Carbide Corp.’s Institute plant. No one was injured and there was no order to evacuate nearby homes.
