In a prepared statement, Polaroid President and Chief Executive I. MacAllister Booth noted that the move combines two divisions that have been the “foundation of Polaroid’s technical strength for several decades.”

The combination of the “increasingly interdependent” disciplines will allow new products to be developed and brought to market more quickly, he said.

“The continuing success of our corporation,” he said, “is dependent on the careful implementation of this new research and development structure. It is important that (it) provide an environment that will continue to attract the very best available talent if we are to build on our strengths.”

Kliem joined Cambridge, Mass.-based Polaroid as an assistant scientist in 1960. In 1980, he was named vice president-research; in 1982, senior vice president and assistant director of research, and in 1985, senior vice president and director of research.
