BRIEFLY : Tournament to Honor CSUN Golfer

Share

A golf tournament is scheduled for Monday at the Woodland Hills Country Club in memory of Ben Graham, a three-time All-American golfer at Cal State Northridge who was killed in a car crash last December, just four months after being married.

Funds raised from the 18-hole tournament will be used to start a scholarship at CSUN in Graham’s name, according to organizer Brad Burris, who played golf with Graham for the Matadors.

Graham, who was graduated from CSUN in 1978, died near Libby, Mont., on Dec. 16 when he swerved to avoid a deer in the road and his car slammed into a logging truck.

Burris said about 110 people have paid to enter the tournament, which begins at 11 a.m. He said there were still openings and that donations would be accepted at the course and through the school.

Richards Signs With Cal

Former San Fernando High running back Chris Richards, the Mid-Valley League Most Valuable Player in 1982 and 1983, will play for Cal next season.

Richards, who played sparingly at Oklahoma as a freshman in 1984, sat out last season while attending College of Alameda.

The 5-11, 185-pound running back will battle for playing time with Marc Hicks, a freshman All-American last season, and former Moorpark College tailback Tyrone Moore.

At San Fernando, Richards was an all-league selection in each of his three seasons. He scored 28 career touchdowns and averaged seven yards per carry.

Richards is the second former Oklahoma football player to sign with another school this week. On Wednesday, quarterback Troy Aikman signed with UCLA.

Former Royal High and Moorpark College pitcher Eric King made his first major league appearance on Thursday when he pitched 5 innings for the Detroit Tigers. King allowed only one hit, struck out three, walked three and did not allow a run in the Tigers’ 8-1 loss to the Texas Rangers in Detroit.

Valley College pitcher Drew Ricker, who was 10-3 and had a 3.49 earned-run average this season, has been signed to play for the San Francisco Giants by scout George Genovese. He will be assigned to Class-A Everett (Wash.) of the Northwest League.

Pat Knight and Steve Tanin of Crespi High have signed national letters of intent to play basketball at UC Davis. John Meyers of Saugus High has signed to play baseball at UC San Diego.
