“Low.” David Bowie. RCA. It’s surprising how often what once seemed an adventurous album now sounds tame. Here’s an exception: When Bowie--greatly intrigued by German techno-poppers Kraftwerk--teamed up with producer Brian Eno in the mid-’70s to explore the world of heavily atmospheric electronic music, the result appeared both radical texturally and probing psychologically. Now, a decade later, the music remains involving on both levels. While there is some hollow instrumental doodling, the key tracks retain the strange mix of seduction and distance that long characterized so much of Bowie’s music.
