Milwaukee Buck Coach Don Nelson will give his share of the team’s NBA playoff money to a financially troubled Wisconsin farmer, and owner Herbert H. Kohl and former owner James F. Fitzgerald will also contribute to the cause.

Clarence Willcome of Birnamwood needs at least $50,000 to save his cattle and repay loans, and Nelson’s 8.3% share of the Bucks’ $140,000 for advancing to the Eastern Conference championship comes to $11,666. Fitzgerald refused to disclose how much he had contributed, saying, “If you help someone and it’s been in the newspaper, then it’s suspect.”

Nelson said he was confident that the money was going to a worthwhile cause because his attorney had met with Willcome and reviewed bank records. The Bucks, as a team, have made a contribution, as have two fans and a neighbor of Nelson’s.

Willcome said he wrote a letter to Nelson asking for advice on his fear of losing his cattle and having to face foreclosure on his farm. The coach said he grew up on a farm and knew of the troubles.
