Mike Ramos of Washington Breaks College Record in Pac-10 Decathlon

Mike Ramos of the University of Washington set a collegiate record Tuesday by scoring 8,322 points while winning the Pacific 10 Conference decathlon championship.

Ramos, who had won the Pac-10 decathlon in 1983 and 1984, broke the mark of 8,306 set by Bill Motti of Mount St. Mary’s in 1985. It also surpassed the Pac-10 best of 8,171 set by Mark Anderson of UCLA in 1981.

The mark placed Ramos fifth on the all-time U.S. list of decathlon performances.

Jim Connolly of UCLA finished second in the competition with 7,748. Washington State’s Simon Shirley was third at 7,584, Jay Thorson of Stanford fourth at 7,293 and Carlos Gambetta of Washington State fifth at 7,226.

Ramos posted the best marks in two of the five events Tuesday. He won the discus with a throw of 160 feet, 11 inches and took the pole vault with a leap of 15-9.

He had a throw of 208-5 in the javelin and was clocked in 14.98 in the 110-meter high hurdles. He finished with a time of 4:48.06 in the 1,500 meters.

Thorson had the best time in the 110-meter high hurdles, running a 14.66.

Connolly won the javelin with a throw of 210-1 and Shirley captured the 1,500 meters in 4:22.93.
