Tennis Roundup : Sabatini Is Surprised by Fernandez

Unseeded 15-year-old Mary Joe Fernandez upset No. 2-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, Thursday in the third round of the $100,000 Swiss Open tennis tournament at Lugano, Switzerland.

Top-seeded Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria defeated Sylvia Hanika of West Germany, 6-1, 6-3.

Sweden and Czechoslovakia were tied, 1-1, when darkness halted play in the $500,000 Ambrose Solaire World Cup at Duesseldorf, West Germany.

In the decisive doubles match, Swedes Mats Wilander and Anders Jarryd were even with Tomas Smid and Pavel Slozil, 7-6, 5-7.

Earlier, Wilander beat Miroslav Mecir, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, and Smid upset Joakim Nystrom, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.

Second-seeded Gretchen Rush of Trinity will meet Patty Fendick of Stanford for the NCAA women’s title today at Austin, Tex.

Rush is in the title match for the second straight year after ousting Sherri Norris of Arizona State, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4. Fendick continued her string of straight-set victories with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Beverly Bowes of Texas.

The No. 1 team of Rick Leach and Tim Pawsat of USC defeated Dexter MacBride and Fannie Reinach of Trinity, 6-4, 6-1, to advance to the second round of doubles in the NCAA men’s championships at Athens, Ga.
