Welcome to Paris

It is reported here in Paris that many Americans are canceling plans to travel to Europe because of terrorism, and to France in particular because of the government refusal to allow a fly-over to Libya. Too bad.

I have been in Paris for two weeks (beginning another six-month tour of the Continent) and I have never been treated so well by the Parisians. True, some of the cafe waiters are practiced experts in larceny and insult, crossing a rue or boulevard can be a heart-stopping exclamation mark, and the wallet damage this year is a pity, even if your pocket isn’t picked.

But, more and more you find a genuine affection for Americans, American things and even the American language by the citizens in the street, cafe and Metro. The cold shoulder so common in past years has changed to a warm welcome everywhere in the city and suburbs.

Those who don’t follow the flock over the cliff can bring their smiles to France and get them back many times over.
