Third-seeded Dan Goldie of Stanford defeated eight-seeded Richey Reneberg of Southern Methodist, 6-2, 6-1, Sunday to win the NCAA men’s singles championship at Athens, Ga.

“I don’t think this is the best I’ve ever played, but it’s probably one of the best matches I’ve played in college,” said Goldie, who became the ninth NCAA singles champion in Stanford history.

“He took control so fast that it made me tentative right away,” Reneberg said. “I was on the defensive the whole time.”

Defending women’s champion Chris Evert Lloyd and 1984 men’s winner Ivan Lendl will see action as the French Open begins today. But 15th-seeded Jimmy Arias, considered the top U.S. hope, may not play after spraining his right ankle during an exhibition match.

Although no decision was made immediately, tournament referee Jacques Dorfman said he fears Arias may have to withdraw.

Lloyd, seeking her record seventh singles championship, will face 18-year-old Cecile Calmette, the French junior girls champion, while Lendl will take on Michael Westphal of West Germany.
