Eddie Lawson of Los Angeles, riding a Yamaha, won the 500cc race in the West German Motorcycle Grand Prix at Nuerburgring, West Germany. He finished 13 seconds ahead of Wayne Gardner of Australia, who was on a Honda.
Lawson was timed in 52 minutes 11.45 seconds, averaging 96 m.p.h. Gardner was clocked in 52:24.35.
