Senegal President Asks $85 Billion in Aid to Africa
Senegalese President Abdou Diouf opened a special General Assembly session on Africa’s economic crisis today with a proposal seeking $85 billion in assistance to the continent from developed countries.
The session is the first held by the United Nations to consider the economic problems of a region. Secretary of State George P. Shultz is to speak to the session Wednesday.
Diouf, chairman of the Organization of African Unity, introduced a proposal from the group which asks industrialized nations to contribute at least $85 billion in new aid and debt relief during the next five years.
An OAU report prepared for the session commits African nations to contribute an equal amount of development investment from their own resources.
