Gov. Mario Cuomo today picked U.S. Rep. Stan Lundine, a Democrat who has proved himself a vote-getter in heavily Republican western New York, as his choice for lieutenant governor.

Cuomo, however, continued to hedge on the question of whether he would run for the presidency in 1988, and explained that he picked Lundine because he wanted someone who knows the job and could work with him closely. “He could serve as governor immediately if the state needed him,” Cuomo said.
