Occidental Shantytown Deadlock Continues

Share

Students and administrators at Occidental College remain deadlocked over when a shantytown built to protest the school’s South African investments should be torn down.

A student group, the Anti-Apartheid Coalition, wants the display to remain until graduation on June 14. But administrators insist that it be dismantled before then.

The two sides have been negotiating for two weeks. A May 20 administration deadline for removing the shacks--symbols of how some blacks live in South Africa--has been extended twice.

The administration will issue a statement today or Friday on what action will be taken if the students do not remove the shantytown, spokesman Lee O. Case said.
