SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION

Several construction projects to relieve overcrowding in Southeast area schools are expected to begin this year, many this month, in a $335-million program that the Los Angeles Unified School District hopes to complete by 1990. Forty district projects have been financed from a statewide bond issue for the construction of new schools and rehabilitation of existing schools, said Patrick Spencer, a school district spokesman.

Spencer said the Southeast projects are the first from the district’s allocation of the bond money. A state bond issue was approved by voters in Novmeber, 1982, to provide $500 million for school projects. Of that money, $150 million is for the refurbishing of school facilities and $350 million is for construction of new schools.

Throughout the Los Angeles area, 16 new schools will be built and a number of schools will be refurbished, Spencer said. Among the projects in Southeast, for a total of $131.5 million, are plans for five new schools in South Gate, Bell and Maywood.
