Gov. Mario M. Cuomo on Wednesday named Rep. Stan Lundine (D-N.Y.) as his choice for lieutenant governor, saying the upstate Democrat “could serve as governor immediately if the state needed him.”

The choice was viewed as significant because the New York governor is frequently mentioned as a possible Democratic presidential candidate in 1988, which would put Lundine in the position of inheriting Cuomo’s job.
