Federal prosecutors expect to reach a plea bargain soon with a civilian Navy employee accused of spying for Israel to avoid a trial that could prove embarrassing to a close U.S. ally, Reagan Administration sources said today.

The sources said Jonathan Jay Pollard, a counterterrorism specialist, was brought to Washington from a federal prison in Virginia last week to discuss the negotiations with his lawyers. “We expect a resolution of the case, and we expect it sooner rather than later,” one source said of the bargaining.
