French Open Tennis Championships : 4,000 Evacuate Roland Garros, as Does No. 5 Jarryd

Top-seeded players Ivan Lendl and Martina Navratilova continued to dodge the upset scythe that claimed more victims Friday in the French Open tennis championships, including fifth-seeded Anders Jarryd of Sweden.

The action-packed day was interrupted when approximately 4,000 spectators were evacuated from one area of the Roland Garros Stadium during the Guillermo Vilas-Jan Gunnarsson match, which Vilas, of Argentina, eventually won, 7-6, 6-2. 3-6, 6-1. The one-hour evacuation was caused by a ticking sound heard coming from a suitcase under the stands, but it turned out to be an alarm clock.

Lendl and Navratilova breezed to straight-set victories on the red clay courts, Lendl beating Chris Miniussi of Argentina, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, and Navratilova ousting Claudia Porwick of West Germany, 6-3, 6-3.

Jarryd was the victim of fellow Swede Ulf Stenlund, who shocked himself with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 victory.

“I just tried to win games, not matches,” Stenlund said after his third consecutive straight-set victory.

With four of the top seven seeded players being Swedes, the 19-year-old Stenlund was not considered one of his country’s favorites. But after five days, Sweden’s hopes now lie with defending champion and No. 2-seeded Mats Wilander, Stenlund and another upstart, Mikeal Pernfors.

After losing to Stenlund, who is ranked just 17th in Sweden and 101st in the world, Jarryd was upset and baffled.

“I don’t know what happened,” he said. “I can’t push myself to win. I have no fighting spirit anymore. After the the first set, I had no guts.”

Two seeded Americans, No. 10 Zina Garrison and No. 16 Terry Phelps, were upset. Teen-ager Laura Garrone ousted Garrison, 6-2, 6-2, and Bulgaria’s Katerina Maleeva eliminated Phelps, 7-6, 6-0.

“I knew I could give her problems,” said Garrone, an 18-year-old Italian. “She likes hard shots and I hit them soft. I concentrated very well in the beginning and I gained confidence during the match.”

Garrone’s next opponent is Navratilova, who lost in last year’s title match to second-seeded Chris Evert Lloyd.

Other fourth-round pairings in the women’s singles will pit No. 12 Catarina Lindqvist of Sweden against No. 7 Kathy Rinaldi, No. 4 Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany against 14-year-old Mary Joe Fernandez, Maleeva against No. 6 Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia, No. 5 Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia against Laura Gildemeister of Peru, Pam Casale against No. 3 Steffi Graf of West Germany, Mercedes Paz of Argentina against No. 13 Carling Bassett of Canada and No. 9 Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina against Lloyd.

In the top half of the men’s draw, the fourth-round pairings pit Lendl against Damir Keretic of West Germany, No. 9 Andres Gomez against Stenlund, No. 4 Yannick Noah of France against No. 13 Johan Kriek and No. 12 Vilas against France’s Guy Forget.
