The Nebraska Supreme Court on Friday reversed the perjury conviction of former state Atty. Gen. Paul Douglas and ordered his case dismissed, ruling he had been wrongly indicted and prosecuted.

“It’s nice to get that burden off my back, which I felt should never have been put there in the first place,” said Douglas, who has long denied that he lied to a special legislative committee investigating the failure of a Lincoln savings company.

The court said Douglas could not be indicted and prosecuted for allegedly lying under oath to the committee because state law doesn’t require an oath in such circumstances.
