The World : U.N. Adopts African Plan

Share

The U.N. General Assembly adopted a resolution urging all governments to help implement a program to ease Africa’s economic plight. The resolution was approved by consensus at a special session of 159-nation body after intense negotiations between African and donor nations. It supports an Organization of African Unity plan calling for worldwide help in rehabilitating the continent’s agriculture, whose failure, due to natural and man-made causes, has brought famine to large parts of Africa. However, the resolution stops short of committing non-African nations to contribute $45.6-billion in foreign aid, as urged by the African organization.
