Dow Down, Then Up

The stock market, down for most of the day, closed higher as concern over the future of interest rates was offset by some encouragement over a bond market rally.
The Dow Jones average of 30 industrials closed up 8.48 at 1,870.43.
New York Stock Exchange volume was about 114.71 million shares compared with 120.59 million shares Monday.
