House OKs Curbs on Third World Loans
Two bills aimed at discouraging the destruction of tropical forests and wildlife in developing nations were passed by voice vote in the House and sent to the Senate on Tuesday.
The bills, sponsored principally by Rep. Gus Yatron (D-Pa.), call upon the U.S. Agency for International Development to emphasize environmental protection in making loans and grants to other nations.
One bill requires the agency to deny assistance to projects that would flood forest land or turn forests into livestock grazing areas. The other bill encourages long-term assistance to promote protection of ecosystems and wildlife and denial of aid to projects that would harm biological diversity.
