Fluor Subsidiary Signs Contracts for $190 Million

An engineering and construction subsidiary of Irvine’s Fluor Corp. has signed two contracts worth a total of $190 million to renovate a General Motors Corp. plant outside Atlanta and to build a major segment of a new Toyota plant in Kentucky, Fluor said Tuesday.

The subsidiary, Daniel International Corp. in Greenville, S.C., has started both projects and expects to complete the GM renovation by August, 1987, and the Toyota structure by February, 1988.

The contract with GM, worth about $125 million, calls for a major change-over in the car maker’s Lakewood, Ga., plant. The plant now produces bodies for T-cars such as Chevrolet Chevettes and Pontiac 1000s. The changes will convert the facility to production of B-car bodies for large-model station wagons, coupes and sedans.

The contract with Ohbayashi Corp., a general contractor for Toyota Motor Manufacturing USA Inc., calls for construction of the new Toyota assembly plant’s welding and press building outside Georgetown in Scott County, Ky. The contract is valued at $65 million. Four other contractors are involved in the construction of the rest of the plant and adjacent facilities.

Joel Thornton, division manager for Daniel’s automotive and manufacturing division, said the new plant will produce Toyota cars only.
