Hyundai Motor America, the Korean auto maker that maintains a U.S. headquarters in Garden Grove, said Wednesday that it sold 13,963 Excel subcompacts in the United States during May, the third consecutive month of rising sales since the auto’s introduction in February.

U.S. sales through the end of May totaled 37,265, about 37% of the automaker’s 1986 goal of 100,000 sales.

Hyundai also announced that it will introduce a three-door hatchback version of the Excel in late June. The company currently sells a five-door hatchback and a four-door Excel. The car’s suggested retail price starts at $4,995.
