Bob Hope’s Jet Forced Down by Engine Trouble

Share

Entertainer Bob Hope and his wife landed safely Wednesday at Burbank Airport after their private jet had engine problems during takeoff, airport officials said.

Rick Vacar, manager of airport affairs, said the British-made, twin-engine jet carrying Hope; his wife, Dolores; their pilot and one other man took off about 1 p.m., experienced engine problems and landed safely moments later, taxiing under its own power to the Martin Aviation hanger where it is based.

A Martin Aviation employee who asked not to be identified said Hope was en route to San Diego, where he was scheduled to perform in a USO show aboard a Navy ship in the evening.

A dispatcher said several Burbank fire units were sent to the airport shortly before 1 p.m. but left after the jet landed. Another plane took Hope and his wife to San Diego.
