A $30,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities has been awarded to the Los Angeles Library Department to assist in replacing books and periodicals lost in the fire at the Central Library on April 29, a spokeswoman for Sen. Pete Wilson (R-Calif.) announced. The grant, from the Humanities Book Rebuilding Program, calls for a dollar-for-dollar match from the city, and that money already has been put up, Wilson press aide Lynda Royster said. In all, about 400,000 books were lost in the fire, Royster said.
