Israeli Accused in Land Fraud Sets Self Afire
An Israeli building contractor accused of land fraud in the Israeli-occupied Arab West Bank committed suicide today by setting himself on fire in an empty swimming pool, police said.
Avraham Gindi, 45, had apparently doused himself in gasoline, and his flaming body was found by his family at his penthouse home near Tel Aviv, they said.
He had made two previous attempts on his life since December when he was charged in a Tel Aviv court. His case was part of a large-scale investigation of the illegal sale of Palestinian land in the West Bank to Jewish settlers.
Police have been investigating complaints by about 200 Arabs that signatures were forged on sale documents and that their land was sold without their knowledge.
