Dr. Alonzo E. Cady has been appointed to the Southern California Veterinary Medical Assn. board of trustees. Cady will represent the San Gabriel Valley and southeast Los Angeles County. Cady, of Covina, graduated from Colorado State University and served in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps.
El Monte police officers Phil Arellano and Marty Penny were awarded the Golden Apple Award from the Mountain View School District for performing outstanding service in education within the district. Arellano has developed Neighborhood Watch, alcohol and drug abuse programs in Spanish, and Penny has worked to curb gang violence and graffiti.
Jerry Irish has been appointed vice president and dean of Pomona College in Claremont. Irish received an undergraduate degree from Cornell University and a doctorate from Yale University. He will replace Robert Voelkel, a former chairman of the religion department, who will return to teaching at the college.
Sharon Rene Hausman, a pre-med graduate of Pomona College in Claremont, was awarded the John Stauffer Prize Scholarship for her research in medicinal organic chemistry. Hausman is a former recipient of the President’s Award for Excellence from the University of Arizona and the Yale University Award. Hausman, of Phoenix, Ariz., will further her study in cell and developmental biology at Harvard Graduate School.
Agent John W. Doan of the Glendora Police Department has been named “Officer of the Year” by the department. Doan, of Glendora, has worked for the department for 17 years.
John Niven, a history professor and faculty coordinator of the Oral History Program at Claremont Graduate School, has been awarded a $52,500 grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission to publish a letterpress edition and microfilm of the Salmon P. Chase papers.
James M. Patronite is the 1986 recipient of the Good Scout Award from the Los Angeles Council of Boy Scouts of America. Patronite, of Pico Rivera has worked with the Boy Scouts in Whittier.
Guiseppe Attardi, a molecular biology professor at Caltech in Pasadena, has been awarded a 1986 Guggenheim Fellowship by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in New York. Attardi, of Altadena, received the fellowship for his study of mitochondria.
Ben Kinmont and Margaret True of Pomona College in Claremont have been awarded Thomas J. Watson fellowships for independent travel and study. The fellowships are $10,000 each. Kinmont, an American studies graduate, will study German neo-expessionism in painting in Germany, France and Great Britain. True, an English graduate, will study feminist theater groups in Australia and Great Britain.
Rafael D. Alvarez, an engineering graduate from Harvey Mudd College, was named Chicano Student of the Year at the Claremont Colleges. Alvarez resides in San Diego.
Dale Sawak, an English professor at Citrus College in Glendora, has received a faculty research endowment from the college and the college foundation to develop materials for the school’s educational program. Sawak will conduct research and study at USC, UCLA, Oxford University, the University of Texas at Austin and the Huntington Library in San Marino.
Neil Gerard, director of the University Union at Cal Poly Pomona and business manager of Associated Students, Inc. at the university, has been elected president of the Assn. of College Unions-International. The association was formed in 1914 to assist college unions and student activity programming.
