Six Los Angeles County high schools and seven junior high schools were among 90 schools chosen statewide as recipients of the California Department of Education’s first Distinguished Schools Awards. In announcing the winners, state Supt. of Public Instruction Bill Honig said he hoped the awards would serve as “a motivation for other schools to strive for excellence.” The county high schools honored were La Canada, Monrovia, Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills, Miraleste in Rancho Palos Verdes and Polytechnic in Long Beach. The winning junior high schools were Audubon, Burroughs and Palms in Los Angeles, Dexter Intermediate in Whittier, Dodson in San Pedro, Jones in Baldwin Park and Rosemont in La Crescenta. They were selected from among 7,000 schools on the basis of test scores and overall improvement, Honig said.
