2 CHOSEN FOR ART MUSEUM AWARDS

A painter of symbolic narratives and a producer of witty video and radio pieces have been christened the 1986 Young Talent Award Purchase winners by the County Museum of Art.

Painter Sabina Ott and media artist Ilene Segalove formally received their awards Sunday afternoon during a reception at City Restaurant.

The annual honors program, now in its 24th year, grants $3,000 to each artist selected. The money pays for one of the artist’s works, to be selected by curators for the museum’s permanent collection.

Ott, 31, was born in New York and educated at the San Francisco Art Institute. Her paintings--diptychs and triptychs featurings objects with symbolic meanings--have been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Charles Cowles Gallery in New York, the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art and the Davies Long Gallery, also in Los Angeles. Her work also has been in group shows at the Newport Harbor Art Museum, L.A. Artcore, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions and UC Berkeley.

Segalove’s humorous commentaries on popular culture have most recently turned up on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered,” but she also has a nationwide list of museum credits. Her video pieces have been shown at the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. The Montreal Film Festival recently presented a retrospective of her work. The 35-year-old artist grew up in Southern California, receiving her BFA from UC Santa Barbara and her MA in Communication Arts from Loyola Marymount University.
