A worker-manager group will try to buy a shipyard

The team of workers and managers hopes to buy the virtually dormant General Dynamics shipyard in Quincy, Mass., to build cruise ships that can be converted to troop carriers. The group hopes to obtain a $260-million subsidy under the Build and Charter Act, which authorized the Navy to fund cruise ships, said George O’Kane president of Local 5 of the Shipbuilding Workers Union. O’Kane said American Flagships of New York is looking for a contractor to build two liners that could be converted within eight days into troop carriers able to transport up to 5,000 troops.
