Irish Bread Served Up at Festival

Irish Soda Bread is but one of the foods to be served at the Grand National Irish Fair at Griffith Park Equestrian Center in Los Angeles on Saturday and Sunday.

Events will include a folk music festival, Irish harpists, a Scottish fiddle competition, bagpipers, strolling musicians, a marching band, dances, parades, games, theater shows and a wolfhound show. A medieval banquet will feature a variety of Irish dishes. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for seniors. Children under 15 will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

The following soda bread, a recipe from Mary Carroll of the Society for Creative Anachronism, is a simple one requiring buttermilk and bicarbonate of soda as the leavening agent.

IRISH SODA BREAD

1 pound flour

1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

1 teaspoon salt

3/4 pint buttermilk

Mix flour, soda and salt in bowl, making sure there are no lumps in soda. Add buttermilk and mix well with wooden spoon. Knead lightly on floured board. Form into round or oval loaf or place in greased 8x5-inch loaf pan and bake at 375 degrees 45 minutes or until bottom of loaf sounds hollow when tapped with knuckle. Makes 1 loaf.
