La Canada School District OKs Educational Day Care

Share

The La Canada Unified School District has agreed to contract with a local YMCA to provide educational day care for students from kindergarten through sixth grade, beginning this fall.

The district plans to continue a recreational day-care program it now offers through the nonprofit Youth House and Community Center in La Canada Flintridge. However, it will add the educational day care in response to a recent district survey that showed that more than half of 1,000 families questioned wanted it.

Under the proposal submitted by the Crescenta-Canada Family YMCA, day care will be offered from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at charges to parents ranging from $15 to $37.50 a week, said Judi Hunter, associate general director at the YMCA.

Board officials also considered a program proposed by the Glendale Unified School District but chose the YMCA because it is a local organization and submitted a less expensive proposal, school officials said.

Both day-care programs will be offered at La Canada Elementary School and Paradise Canyon School, district officials said.
