Kadafi Orders Libyans to Buy Rifles to Fight U.S.

TRIPOLI, Libya — Libyan leader Moammar Kadafi on Wednesday ordered his countrymen to pay $800 each to finance the purchase of one million rifles for the fight against America.
In a nationally broadcast address, he also said, “Had we had the power, we would have bombed London and New York” in retaliation for the April 15 U.S. bombing raid on Libya’s two largest cities, Tripoli and Benghazi. The American warplanes took off from air bases in England and Navy ships in the Mediterranean Sea.
If only Libya had “strategic aircraft,” the 44-year-old colonel said, “we would not have hesitated.”
From time to time the Arabic words “live broadcast” appeared on the television screen, but occasional gaps and a divergence between sound and lip movements indicated the opposite.
