A unit of the Irvine-based Fluor Corp. has been awarded a contract by the Department of Commerce to play a “significant part” in the federal government’s $500-million program to improve National Weather Service facilities, according to Fluor spokesman Rick Maslin. At the government’s request, he said, Fluor will not disclose the dollar value of the contract.

Under terms of the contact, Maslin said, Fluor Technology Inc. will provide engineering, architectural design, construction management and construction inspection for about 90 new, expanded or modified weather service offices, plus program management and construction inspection services at 172 radar facilities located in the United States and other countries.

Maslin said that Fluor has been striving to obtain federal government contracts as part of its strategy of diversification into fields not related to the slumping energy industry.
