LET’S NOT . . .

Memo to Mitch: Don’t shut down the studio.

That’s the advice from here to Mitch Easter, who made his name as proprietor of the mecca of the New Southern Rock, North Carolina’s Drive-In Studio. But Easter wants to be known as more than a producer of other acts, so he’s out there with his own band, Let’s Active, which attempts to cram everything from British Invasion pop to psychedelia to surf to hard rock into a coherent package.

The results are sometimes at least interesting on record, but if you go by Friday’s show at the Palace, the band has no business on stage. The four musicians projected no personality or attitude, and their dull display of undeveloped hooks and repetitive guitar solos was a fury in a fishbowl--for all the chopping and churning, there was no movement or momentum. Some lead vocals from guitarist Angie Carlson would have provided welcome relief from Easter’s thin, dry singing, but she stayed in a strictly supporting role.
