Wreckage of U.S. Warplane Washes Ashore, Libya Radio Says
Wreckage from an American warplane lost during the April 15 air raid on Libya has washed ashore near Tripoli, Libya radio said Sunday.
A report monitored by the British Broadcasting Corp. said the debris, from an F-111 fighter-bomber, came ashore in the Sabratah area, about 50 miles west of the Libyan capital.
A total of 24 F-111s based at Lakenheath and Heyford in England, plus a number of carrier-based light bombers, took part in the U.S. attack on Tripoli and Benghazi.
Libya reported that several of the attacking warplanes were shot down. U.S. officials said that only one F-111 was lost, and the two-man crew was listed as killed in action.
Libya said later that two flight helmets washed up on its beaches.
