Despite a dramatic shift since 1980 in political party affiliation, in which the Democratic Party’s historic advantage over the Republican Party virtually disappeared, Americans’ basic political orientation--the proportions describing their political views in conservative, moderate and liberal terms--is almost exactly the same today as it has been for at least the last decade. In a mid-April Gallup Poll, 28% described their basic political ideology as right of center, 45% in centrist or moderate terms, and 20% as left of center.
