Farming has resumed on land near the crippled Chernobyl nuclear plant but the agricultural teams will be rotated every 10 days, the Soviet press agency Tass said today in an indication of lingering concerns about radiation contamination.

In a dispatch about the resumption of agricultural work on six evacuated farms of the Chernobyl district, Tass said “normal life, with its summer cares, is returning to the countryside” following the April 26 nuclear power plant disaster, history’s worst.

The reactor site, 600 miles southwest of Moscow is in the heart of the Ukrainian breadbasket, which produces much of the Soviet Union’s food.
